‘Banri Ikkuu’ comes from ‘the Book of 5 Rings’ written by the legendary swordsman Miyamoto MUSASHI.
In English, it means ‘The entire world is under the same sky.’ In other words, this is said to mean: ‘Wherever you are, keep calm and focus on your goals’.
This motto is featured, along with traditional ‘Tonbo’.
In Japanese culture, Tonbo, which means ‘Dragonfly’ in English, is a well-known symbol of the Samurai. Tonbo were popular with warriors, due to the fact that they are only ever able to fly forwards – they are unable to fly backwards. For this reason, they were known as ‘Kachi-Mushi’, or the ‘insect of victory’. During the Sengoku Jidai (Japanese warring states period), Tonbo were commonly seen decorating helmets, armor and swords of warriors, in order to inspire them never to retreat.

The bag is well made, the canvas feels much better than cheap alternative materials and the inner lining is a beautiful red. Easily fits my shinai and I love the design on the outside.
